“Relationships are magnificent and complicated, distinct worlds. The rules are made up as you go, negotiated over time.
These are emotional terrariums of a sort that need care, with weeds to pull and the wonder of occasional blooms.”
From the introduction
This book project is about our eight-year adventure living with Alzheimer’s disease. The book follows the chaos inflicted on intimacy and friendship from the perspective of a long-term relationship.
Portraits of my husband are in black and white tones; capturing his world as he loses his memories. Once a week, I took my camera to the ocean for an hour. Witnessing the waves helped me practice watching what I could not change. The silence underwater became a meditation, helping me cope with the anarchy in our lives. The ocean’s drama was photographed in color.
Quotes and thoughts from both of us are strewn throughout the book.
In 2021, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million. www.alz.org
